Thailand agrees to meet Cambodia late this month

Defence Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa on Thursday said Thailand has agreed to convene a meeting of the General Border Committee by late August at the request of his Cambodian counterpart.
Speaking to reporters before attending the first cabinet meeting at Government House, Yutthasak said the Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Banh sent a letter inviting him to pay an official visit to Cambodia.
An hour later, his Cambodian counterpart telephoned asking him to hold a GBC meeting to resolve the border dispute.
Gen Yuttisak said he agreed to move ahead on the request once the government delivers its policy statement to Parliament.

World Bank halt irks officials

The government expressed disappointment yesterday with the World Bank’s announcement that it had halted new country loans due to the ongoing land dispute at Boeung Kak lake in Phnom Penh and vowed to raise the issue with the bank’s executive board.
“We are very dissatisfied with the World Bank’s decision because we are partners on several projects,” Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, said yesterday, referring to the 21 projects the bank now funds in the country.
“Each programme is an agreement the two parties have made with each other. No one has a right to breach these contracts.”

Beer promoter in hospital

One Angkor beer promoter was hospitalised yesterday after reportedly being struck by a company minivan and another three feinted from smoke inhalation when police attempted to extinguish flames from tyres they had set alight on the eighth day of their strike.
Yoeun Sreymon, 29, was taken to Bayon Hospital after being knocked down by a red Angkor minivan, fellow strikers said. They said she was pregnant and that she was unconscious when they took her to the private hospital for undisclosed injuries.

Cambodian awarded ‘Nobel prize’ of Asia

Cambodian citizen Koul Panha has been awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, often referred to as Asia’s Nobel peace prize, for his work with the Committee for Free and Fair Elections.
He is one of six people to receive this year’s award, which will be presented to them at a ceremony in Manila on August 31.
He is being recognised for “his determined and courageous leadership of the sustained campaign to build an enlightened, organised and vigilant citizenry who will ensure fair and free elections – as well as demand accountable governance by their elected officials – in Cambodia’s nascent democracy”, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation said.

Disappearing line between confiscating land, and stealing it

(Commentary) – For generations, Burma’s land-holding patterns have been riddled with inequalities and injustices. In the feudal era, the King possessed most lands and serfs were forced to work his estates. In the colonial era, large landowners exploited class and ethnic inequities in order to advance British interests.
Unfortunately, after six decades of independence, similar inequalities with respect to land issues persist for the people of Burma.

Actor in hot water over filming in prohibited area

The National Park Department is seeking police action against a wellknown actor and TV documentary host for allegedly filmed his programme in a protected national forest without permission and for violating officials’ orders.
Kanjana Nittaya, chief of Phu Khieu wildlife sanctuary in Chaiyaphum’s Konsarn district said that she had filed the complaint with police on July 20 against Jessdaporn Pholdee, host of Navigator programme, which is aired on Channel 3.
The actor and the crew had sought permission to film in the sanctuary and her office had permitted them to film in some parts of the sanctuary, which are open to the public and for filming.

Pinoy architect wins Dubai photography contest

DUBAI – Filipino architect Eric Olympia Fajut bagged the top prize in the 1st Dubai Municipality (DM) Photo Contest for World Migratory Birds Day in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Fajut’s winning photo stood out among the entries of the 40 other participants as it was the only one that captured flamingos in action on its natural habitat.
Fajut said that he patiently waited for the pair of birds to do something unusual.
“It was when the other flamingo spread its wings that I took the shot. It was a decisive moment,” he said.

Monk, publisher win awards

A monk who went into hiding in March over fears authorities would arrest him for attending land dispute protests will be awarded Human Right’s Watch’s Hellman/Hammett award next month, along with an anti-government newspaper publisher.
Venerable Loun Savath, who has come out of hiding and is now living in Slaeng pagoda in Siem Reap province, said yesterday that the award – which is granted to those who speak out in the face of intimidation – was for the people.
“Though I received the award I don’t regard it as mine, I regard it as people’s award that are thirsty and hungry for the truth,” he said.

Nan residents fear another

Six districts in the northern province of Nan, including the town of the same name, were declared flood disaster zones yesterday, while 50 schools were temporarily closed and the Nan Prison ordered some of its 100 inmates moved to other facilities.
Five districts in the western province of Tak were also declared disaster zones and officials moved residents from Ban Khane Jeu in Tha Song Yang district out of the landslide-prone area.
As rain continued, the flood level in Nan municipality was 50-70 centimetres deep, which prompted businesses to close and people to shift belongings to higher ground, with help from local soldiers.
